Hi,

A closed cubical box is completely filled with water and is accelerated horizontally towards right with an acceleration 'a'. The resultant normal force by the water on the top of the box

(A) passes through the centre of the top
(B) passes through a point to the right of the centre
(C) passes through a point on the left of the centre
(D) becomes zero.

Can you please explain the answer?

I think you can get to the answer by the method of elimination.

When you accelerate the block righwards the shape of the surface of the liquid would change so that the surface becomes perpendicular to the direction of the resultant acceleration.

So the liquid would rise on the left side and fall on the right side , now since the block is closed normal reaction would be there otherwise the liquid would have fallen out and hence giving normal=0.

So this way (c) seems correct.!

There is no better feeling in this world than being a winner!

i think its (c).. when box is acc. towards right the water will try to get accumulated towards left(every body tries to be in its initial position)therefore centre of mass will be towards left of centre...

Its
(C) passes through a point on the left of the centre.

Both the above quoted reasons are correct and valid.

The Scientist does not study nature because it is useful; he studies it because he delights in it, & he delights in it because it is beautiful. If nature were not beautiful, it would not be worth knowing, life would not be worth living. Ofcourse I do not here speak of that beauty that strikes the senses, the beauty of qualities & appearances; not that I undervalue such beauty, far from it, but it has nothing to do with science; I mean that profounder beauty which comes from the harmoniuos order of the parts, & which a pure intelligence can grasp.

well......edison sir n joyfrancis...i disagree with u both....i am not sure of my explanation..but i think dis is also to b thought of......

well...lets keep in view the following points...
1) the box is completely filled (given)
2) liquids are incompressible (a fact)

now that  the box is completely filled and also because dat the liquids are incompressible, the liquid cannot move....hence we can say that all the perticles of the liquid remain in their equilibrium state.....so there cannot be any extra force...and so the normal force passes thro the centre of the top (a)...

all experts, please answer......am i in a misconception??
if i am wrong please correct me.....plssssssssssssss.....i think its (a)..not (c)
