suppose a piece of wood sinks to the bottom of a tank. after sometime it comes to the surface.if the x-direction fluid forces cancel each other, what makes the piece to come to the surface if there is no water below it?

Bouancy force is always equal to the weight of fluid displaced by the body and acts at c.g.
Body moves upward when wieght of the displaced liquid is more than the weight of body. If this is equal to the weight of body it will remain submursed.

buoyant force is actually due to the pressure difference between different layers of the liquid. it is not necessary for fluid to be below it...
