when a cat jumps from the top of a bulilding it's weight(mg) is balanced by drag force..............applied on it by atmosphere....
as drag force is proportional to area so when cat is falling it expands it's legs to increase area........
so by newton's 2nd law if f=0 then a=0
therefore it falls with a uniform velocity called terminal velocity.....
rate if u like !!

i hav some doubts firstly, what is drag force ? and secondly, someone told me its based on conservation of angular momentum. any idea ??? also, why only for a cat and not for humans ???

only for very large heights a cat can protect itself.. not from small heights like trees.. thts y if a cat gets trapped on a tree we need a ladder to get it down... its too scared to jump,.
for large heights, during motion it shifts its centre of gravity so that it becomes right side up as in paws down and head up... in landing position . and just before landing it curves upwards concave like a parachute to use air resistance to lessen the impact of landing plus its paws are highly padded so it lands safely... this is why it is said that cats have nine lives.. most of the times they can save themselves from seemingly fatal falls.

yes it uses angular momentum conservation concept... when it needs to control its speed of rotation to set its position right
