does the body get fully immersed in the water and liquid? if yes, then the density of the metal comes out to be 7g/cc(i'm not sure, i might be wrong) ; if no, then i have to think about the question once again....

this should be fine, well see let the volume be v now in air 210=v*d1..........................1 d1 is dens.of air 180=v*d2..........................................2 d2 is den of water 120=vd3.....................................3 d3 density of unknown liquid now the fourth equ. is the relation between the densities of water and air (which u can easily look up in a book)
rate me plssss

Vp1g = 21/10 [ p1 is density of substance ] ------------- Eq. 1 Vp1g - Vp2g = 18/10 [ p2 is density of water ] ------------- Eq. 2 Put Eq. 1 in Eq. 2, you get, Vp2g = 3/10 ----------- Eq. 3 Eq. 1 / Eq. 3 p1 / p2 = 7 p1 = 7p2 Density of water is 1 gm/ml Density of material = 7 gm/ml

Q) A sample of metal weighs 210g in air, 180g in water and 120g in an unknown liquid. then density of metal is Sol) Density of water = 1g/cc We consider density of air to be negligible = 0 (though strictly it is not) Let volume of the sample = V cubic centimeter = V cc So buoyancy force due to water = Fw = V dw Where, dw is density of water = 1 gm/cc so 180 g = 210 g - V dwg (where g is accln due to gravity) so V = 30 cc Now density of unknown liquid = dp so 120g = 210 g - V dpg or, 120 = 210 - 30dp so, dp = 90/30 = 3 gm/cc also density of metal = 210/V = 210/30 = 7g/cc

The Scientist does not study nature because it is useful; he studies it because he delights in it, & he delights in it because it is beautiful. If nature were not beautiful, it would not be worth knowing, life would not be worth living. Ofcourse I do not here speak of that beauty that strikes the senses, the beauty of qualities & appearances; not that I undervalue such beauty, far from it, but it has nothing to do with science; I mean that profounder beauty which comes from the harmoniuos order of the parts, & which a pure intelligence can grasp. |

dear mr. edison, i think your solution has a flaw. you have taken 210g to be the mass of the body but the question states that the body weighs 210g which means the mass of the body is 21g. if i'm wrong then plz do tell me.....

Dear Catch_arnnie,
Just don't wory about numerical values. The procedure is not going to change which is more important. Just follow the approach.
Moreover If u take mass of the body to be 21g, event then also ratio is maintained and the answer will not change, it will be same only that is density of metal = 7 g/cc only.

dear mr. edison, i think ur 2nd equation(120g = 210 g - V dp g ) might be wrong, coz here dp should be the density of the unknown liquid not the density of the metal, plz clarify if i'm wrong....
