suppose that while lying on a beachwatching the sun set over a calm ocean,you start a stopwatch just as the top of sun disappears.You then stand,elevatingyour eyes by a height h=1.70 m.,and stop the watch when the top of sun again disappers. If the elapsed time on the watch is t=11.1 s. then what is the radius of earth???????

cos  = R/(R+h) here = 360/(24*60*60) * 11.1 = .04625 ocos = 0.999999674 = R/(R+1.70) R = 1.7*0.999999674/(1-0.999999674) = 5214722m
