thought provoking sum in fluids

mercury is pured into a u tube in which the cross sectional area of the lieft hand lime is three times smaller than that of the right one ..... the level of mercury in the narrow limb is at a distance 30 cim from the upper end of the tube. how much will mercury level rise in the right hand if the left hand is filled with wate th top......

i am not understanding the concept here........ the pressure at the bases will be equal i understand that........ but is the force at the base also equal.................or why would the area differnece be given ........... or maybe for the same increase in hieght mercury level be thrice dont understand pls help.......
