he does this to avoid injury................. impulse = force * time = change in linear momentum he increases the time of catch, so he has to apply smaller force to stop the ball!!

to reduce the rate of transfer of impulse. more the time he takes lesser are chances of getting hurt. for more explanation see NCERT: momentum

The same implies for a DIVER. When a diver dives with his chest parallel to the surface of water, he gets hurt on his chest but if he dives with his feet or head entering the water first then it doesn't hurts him. But it is due to the area of the surface parallel to the surface of the water. The area in case of chest is more while it is less in case of head or feet.
