its n hypothetical concept
{{{ m not saying imaginary }}}}
concept was introduce as a reason to prove magnetic dipole moment of an atom
but is proved that electron perform 2 types of circular motion
1 motion around an nucleus
2 circular motion around itself i.e. rotating about an axis passing through its center perpendicular to its plane of revolution around nucleus

Dear
   Your lecturer is right and If you are trying ti visualize the electron as planets and nucleus  as sun  you are almost ok for the entrance examinations but do not for get the quantization to include in the planet model but Keep scope in your mind for modification of the bohrs theory if you are looking for a career in Physics . Your lecturer is correct in a way to spin an electron  it has to be particle but quantum mechanics say Its not It can not be catagorized like particle or WAVE .
