Time is a fourth dimension. Time travel means travelling on a 'curled' time line. This is possible only in fifth dimension.

Lets take an example. Suppose an ant is moving on a page of a newspaper. Thus ant is travelling in two dimensions. For the ant to reach from one end to another, it has to travel through entire page. If we curl the page so as to join the two ends, then the ant can move from one end to another without moving through entire page.

Thus when we curl the newspaper, we are actually doing it in third dimension. If you look from the point of view of an ant you can never see that third dimension. Thus in two dimensions ant has 'jumped' from one end to another.

Similarly to travel in time we have to 'fold' this time line in fifth dimension. But we are four dimensional beings and so we cannot enter the fifth dimension.

Note that it does not mean that there is no fifth dimension. Actually some scientists believe that there are 10 dimensions. We cannot see the other dimensions.....

The simple reason is that had  time travel  possible, it would be possible for some1 to go back past and kill her / his own mother  ( before marriage) and father.

Then he does not exist as both her / his would be father and mother does not exist !!!

lol !!!!

it is not important where u stand, but in which direction u are moving

Hey ramyani, it is for this reason that in some sci-fi movies, they say that you cannot travel back in past..!!

But still there are some movies which describe the situation like the one you have mentioned...Recall Back to the Future....!!!

Actually, it can b easily understood .

As v know that the entropy of the universe is continuosly increasing. So, if the entropy now is x , next momemt it will b x+h.

so, if u will travel back in time, u have to go from more spontaneous to less spontaneous situation. Which is not feasible.

Again ,as is the case of dimensions, it is not a completely proven fact. It is still a lots of controversies in between different science communities.Just like multiverse theory & the grandfather paradox.

In my opinion, it is only possible through a worm hole of time ( that can give some negative time to its travvelers) jus like negative energy.

Now, the wormhole thing is said to really exist, that points in space exist which are interconnected through another dimension, possibly in different "times". However, such wormholes, if at all they exist, are small, and any particle passing through  it whould warp the space -time curvature and destabilize the wormhole. hence, time travel ( or infact travelling faster than light ) by this method is not possible
