in radioactive decay, a nucleus emits an alpha particle and two beta particle successively. show that the final nucleus is an isotope of original nucleus.

Let the element be _ZX^A

so

on alpha decay

_ZX^A-----> _Z-2Y^A-4

on 2 beta particles decay

_Z-2Y^A-4 ----> _Z-1Z^{A - 4} -----> _ZW^{A - 4}

since the atomic number z is same for _ZX^A and _ZW^A-4 so both W and X represent the same element and as their atomic masses A are different so they are isotopes.

in alpha decay, the atomic no decreases by 2 and in beta decay, the atomic no increases by 1
so, let z the atomic no of the nucleus. when the nucleus emits alpha particle, the atomic no becomes z-2 and when it emits 2 beta particles, the atomic no increases by 2*1=2. so the final atomic no is z-2+2 which is z. so the initial and final nuclei are isotopes
