On heating a substance, there comes a stage when it emits light. On heating a metal plate,it emits electrons.then what is uncommon in both the situations or when does a substance emit electron and when photon?

we get photon when light of frequency more then threshould frequeny incident on metal i.e this light stimulate loosely bound electons to go in higher energy band & as life time of higher energy band is over electron come back to original energy state emmiting some radiation = to difference betn tat energy states known as photon.... & when we heat any substance light is emmited by it bcz of properties of substance i. r crystalline properties , u can see 4 different substance properties on heating them r different .... i will try 2 giv exact info on it next time... rate me if u r satisfied

Neha you are talking about photoelectric effect while abhishek is asking about thermoionic emission. The metal will emit both photons and and electrons, The only difference is that light will be emitted at low temperature while electron emission will take place at higher temperature. The temperature at which this will happen will depend on the nature of metal.
