wat is a RED SHIFT? pls explain.

Basically when an object is moving AWAY from the observer at a high speed the light shifts to the RED side of the spectrum, just like when an object is moving TOWARDS the observer the light shift to the BLUE side, which is blue shift. We know this cos distant stars which are moving away from us are all red shifted,
