when frequency of incident light is greater than threshold freq electrons are emmited and when freq is less no emission is observed but what happens when the freq is exactly equal to threshold freq????

The atom becomes fully ionised but no electrons are released

electrons are emitted,if u want the theoritical view..... this is becoz the electron posseses just exactly that much amount of energy that is required to overcome the attractive force of the nucleus.... but these electrons have no energy to move forward, and thus there is no flow of current in this case, except if there is a collector plate at sufficiently high potential to accelerate the electrons.... practically,no photocurrent is observed

if threshhold frequency=probvided energy then electrons just will be on surface

READ CAREFULLY.................
frm photoelectric equation
hv=hv0+k.e when v=v0 then k.e is zero....... k.e. is zero so electrons r said to jus cross the potential barrier of the metal...............surface but since the k.e is zero the electrons r absorbed back due to the creation of equal positive charged on the metal surface......................

electrons are released but they dont have any KE.

Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.
