A day of pride for city's IIT-JEE toppers

Engineering Entrance ,

After all the hard work, it is now time for rewards for students who recently got through the JEE to secure a position in the IITs in the country. FIITJEE, one of the prominent centres coaching students for the JEE, organised two award distribution ceremonies at the Raj Bhavan and Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall for students who secured high ranks in IIT-JEE in the city, on Sunday.

While the Governor of Tamil Nadu K. Rosaiah presented the top five rankers with medals and cash prizes at the function held at Raj Bhavan, Arun Anant, CEO, The Hindu, gave off similar prizes to 250 other awardees of the Talent Reward Examination. The function, held at Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall, included entertainment in the form of cultural performances by students.

R. Vaishakh, who ranked the highest in the city and 36th on an all-India basis, is all set to take that step towards becoming an electrical engineer. When asked about what he intended to do with the money, he replied with a grin, “I think I’ll buy a laptop.” Vaishakh received a medal and a cash reward of Rs. 2 lakh.

R. Roshan, the second highest scorer, like all the other awardees, said that he didn’t expect to get such a high rank. When not immersed in studying, Roshan particularly likes to watch movies and listen to music. His father, S. Kumar, added, “We came to Chennai, all the way from Trichy, so that he could prepare for IIT. Now he will become an electrical engineer and make an achievement.” The other awardees included Arvind K. (all India rank 73), K.M. Siddharth (all India rank 78) and A.V. Nannan (all India rank 80). They each received a silver medal and cash reward worth Rs. 1 lakh.

A proud teacher, V. Rakesh Reddy, who has been teaching chemistry for the past six years said, “The results this year have been very good. The children have worked twice as hard. We have taught them all the basic concepts and now they are ready for IIT.” Ankur Kumar Jain, the Director of FIITJEE centre in Chennai, shared similar views. “The results have been better not just for FIITJEE but also for Tamil Nadu.” Referring to the cash prizes, he said, “The cash reward is given for their expenditure at IIT, so that they can do even better.”

The principals of Maharishi Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Chettinad Vidyashram, Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Senior Secondary School, Maharishi International Residential School, Indian Public School and St. Thomas Residential School received awards from Dr. Rosaiah, as well.

The schools that exhibited a good performance in the FIITJEE talent reward exam were also presented with awards.
