Automation Centre of Excellence to come up at IIT-M

The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras and the Automation Industry Association (AOA) have singed an agreement to set up a Centre of Excellence at IIT-M.
Leading automation companies having a global footprint such as B&R Automation, Larsen & Toubro Control and Automation, Invensys Process Management, and Siemens Limited, have announced immediate participation with their state-of-the-art technologies.
P.V. Sivaram, MD, B&R Industrial Automation, and an alumnus of IIT-M, said the challenge was to share and excite a global industrial vision amongst the new breed of B.Tech and M.Tech graduates.
K. Nandakumar, vice-president, AIA, said the tie-up would be an opportunity to showcase success ideas and interact with emerging technical talent and users. There would be rich technical content, as each participating company would be bringing in a mentor and a subject matter or domain expert. There would be joint development of curriculum, research projects, individual technology demonstrations, and training workshops under the terms of the MoU. “The objective is to infuse lot of contemporary technology and content into the educational system. Only then will India’s talent be aligned to employ skilled resources and invest for quality, sustainability and continuity of supplies.”
Automation or industrial automation is the use of control systems such as computers to control industrial machinery and processes, replacing human operators.
Whereas mechanisation provides human operators with machinery to assist them with the physical requirements of work, automation greatly reduces the need for human sensory and mental requirements. The demands of modern-day production, especially high volume activity, necessitate mechanisation and its associated intelligence. Automation imparts that intelligence through its three main constituents: sensors, analysers and actuators.
All manufacturing industries throughout the world have benefited through the technological advancements in process monitoring, control, and industrial automation over the past decades.
The pace of modernisation projects in India is increasing every year and is attractive for the attention of global technology majors and machine builders in establishing engineering, manufacturing and customer service facilities.
