Future of marine engineering students in choppy waters

Engineering Entrance , JEE Main

Students of final semester BE (marine engineering) of Shantilal Shah College of Engineering in Bhavnagar have gone on strike fearing that their future is at stake as the college has not got necessary approval from the government department. The college is government-aided and is affiliated to Gujarat Technological University.

According a final semester student Yagnesh Sachdev, there are total 250 students. "This year, 60 students will pass out from the marine engineering department. But, since our course is not recognized by director general of shipping (Mumbai), our degree certificates do not make any sense for job eligibility in the market," he said.

On Tuesday, protesting students stopped other students from attending classes and said that on Wednesday they will go to Gandhinagar to meet officials of director of technical education to represent their issue.

"Our college is running marine engineering course since 2008 without DGS approval. DGS is the board which governs shipping in India. It is mandatory that the college providing marine engineering should be approved by DGS. As this college is not approved, those passing out from here will not get job in any shipping company. Hence, the future of about 250 marine engineers is in dark,'' one of the students Gaurav Gupta said.

"After we took our admission, we were told that the procedure to get the approval by DGS is underway, but nothing has been done so far. We have written letters to government in this regard, but we are yet to get any response from them. Now, protest is the only way out for us,'' Sachdev said.

"Whenever, we ask our college management, they only say that the matter is pending with government and they can't do anything,'' another student said.
