Government to promote education act through TV
The government will take the help of private TV channels to reach out to the masses and popularize an act that makes education compulsory for all children aged six to 14. The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, popularly known as Right to Education Act, will come into effect from April 1 across India and the human resource development (HRD) ministry is trying its best to make its effect felt all over the country.
"Looking at the reach of television channels, we are going to take help from them. Our minister (Kapil Sibal) is calling a meeting of several TV channels very soon," an HRD ministry official told IANS.
The ministry is also preparing a one-minute video capsule to spread the message of the RTE and hopes it will be aired on TV channels a few days before April 1. The act seeks to achieve 10 broad objectives such as free and compulsory education, quality education, focus on social responsibility and the obligation of teachers and de-bureaucratisation of admissions.
The act also speaks of neighbourhood schools, which will largely benefit students from the underprivileged sections of society.
