IIT admission body sticks to only 20 percentile formula

Engineering Entrance ,

Despite some important suggestions by various IITs, the Joint Admission Board of IITs which met on Sunday is understood to have made no change to its earlier resolution on the 20 percentile formula for 2013 eligibility. The resolution had been accepted by the IIT Council on June 27. The JAB, responsible for working out the details of the JEE, consists of IIT directors and JEE chairmen.

Over the last one month, the senates of different IITs had given suggestions to make the eligibility criteria more flexible especially for the students who had given the board exams in 2012. IIT Delhi had suggested that for 2013, both 60% and 20 percentile should be considered. IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur had both made a recommendation that for those who had cleared the boards in 2012, the eligibility criteria should be 60%.

But the JAB meet on Sunday is believed to have not incorporated any of the suggestions. It had broad ranging discussion on the suggestions but decided to stick to what it had resolved on June 23.

IIT Delhi had recommended that the number of students filtered for the advanced exam should be around 50,000 and not 1.5 lakh. But according to sources JAB has decided to stick to the 1.5 figure.

Even for the advanced exam, it is understood to have said that the pattern and syllabus would be the same as that in 2012.
“Now it is too late for bringing about any changes. This will confuse the students all the more. Looking into this the JAB, must have decided not to incorporate any new suggestion,” said an IIT professor.

After the JAB meet on June 23 recommending the new formula, the IIT Council had on June 27 announced the new pattern, essentially a compromise formula in which a student had to be in the top 20 percentile of his/her board for being eligible for the exam.

The IIT-JEE 2013 will be a two tier exam—main and advanced. Main exam will be a screening exam. Final rank will depend on the performance in the advanced exam, to be held three weeks after the main exam.
