IIT alumni reject common JEE plan

Engineering Entrance , JEE Main

Even as the IIT faculty opposed the idea of a new JEE, old students of the Powai campus have booed it, saying the quality of students would dip.

In an online survey conducted by IIT-B's alumni magazine Fundamatics, 78% respondents shot down the proposed JEE and the same numbers were against the setting up of more IITs. Students, alumni and faculty spanning 20 countries participated in the survey.

The idea of a single pan-India exam did not go down well with respondents. "Five lakh people take the JEE. A common test for all engineering institutes is likely to see a swell in candidates by ten-fold. How does the MHRD propose to address the logistical issue of conducting an exam for such large numbers without imposing serious constraints on administering such a test and diluting the almost sacrosanct and incorruptible institution that JEE is today," noted a respondent.

The supposition that a single test will lead to reduction in stress was contested and comments left stated that a single test would increase stress since the prospect of failure would be even more.

Bakul Desai, who is on the board of directors of the IIT-B alumni association, said that the questions in the survey were oft discussed issues on and off campus.
