IIT-JEE gives students few surprises

Engineering Entrance , JEE Main

Students across the board said that Sunday's Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE) was relatively easy, in what is likely to be the last JEE in its present format. Around 5.07 lakh candidates across the country appeared for the two-part exam, which determines entry to the 15 IITs.

The JEE is likely to be replaced by "main" and "advanced" papers next year, alongside giving 40% weightage to a student's board exam marks based on their percentile score in the Class 12 exams.

Students appeared on Sunday for two papers - in the morning and afternoon - comprising Maths, Physics and Chemistry questions. There were minor deviations in format compared to last year, including the total worth of the exams falling from 484 marks last year to 408 this year.

Coaching class heads and students also pointed out that there were no "match the following" type questions this time. Overall, students said the first paper was very easy, while the second paper was somewhat tougher. No one reported any errors.

"I was taken slightly unawares by some of the small changes in the format, but I had no problems at all," said Rikhav Shah, 17, an RN Podar School student.

Students had more mixed reactions to the second paper, which they also said was slightly longer than last year's.

"I found paper two slightly tougher," said Manek Madan, 17, who appeared for the exams at KC College in Churchgate.

Coaching classes also analysed the papers and said they had not found any errors.

Last year's JEE had 36 marks worth of errors, with the IITs later awarding some marks for the wrong questions to all students.

This time, with almost all students finding paper one easy, the cut-offs might be higher.

"The gaps between the ranks might also be smaller," said Praveen Tyagi, managing director of IIT-ian's Pace.
