IIT student gives hope through music

Tabla teacher Sarthak Kumar has set up a charity school ‘Brahmanth’ to teach tabla to slum children free of cost. Influenced by the philosophy of economist Adam Smith, Kumar feels that joining an NGO is not the route to helping people. Even though Kumar has worked for a year with United Nations and
is pursuing a a PhD from IIT, Delhi, Kumar claims to have refused many lucrative offers of joining an NGO and instead decided to make his passion for table into a profession.   Starting with one student in 2006, Kumar’s fame spread rapidly in Gurgaon. Today, over 50 students of different age groups come to his home in Chandralok society to learn tabla.

“My aim is to give back to society through my talent,” says this visionary. To give shape to his vision, Kumar has taken a basement on rent in DLF Phase 4 where he teaches tabla to slum children free of cost every day between 1pm and 3pm. Kumar provides all the instruments and a daily meal to poor kids.The music school is affiliated to Pracheen Kala Kendra in Chandigarh and seven slum kids from the school have cleared the ‘Prarambhik Part 1’ course this year.They also gave their first public performance at the annual Brahmnath concert held at Epicentre this month.  “I want to make these kids independent by teaching them how to play table. It will help them earn a living and live a life of dignity,” Kumar says.
