Not all candidates who have qualified through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) to appear in the shortlist are going to get seats in IITs this year.
With the new marking system in place, many candidates have been able to score enough to be qualified to be ranked and shortlisted. But the limited seats available will ensure a cut-off rank for the shortlisted candidates, and only those ranking on or before that rank will be given admission into IIT.
The results of the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE 2012) for admissions to various courses in the fifteen IITs, IT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad, were declared on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 6am,as was notified.
A total number of 4,79,651 candidates appeared in both papers of IIT-JEE-2012, which was conducted by seven of the IITs on April 8, 2012. Out of the total number of candidates, 24,112 candidates have secured ranks in various categories, and 18,468 have been shortlisted for counselling, for admission to 9,647 seats in the IITs at Bhubaneswar, Bombay, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Mandi, Patna, Rajasthan, Ropar, Roorkee and IT-BHU Varanasi and ISM Dhanbad.
“Previously, we would shortlist only those candidates who would be allowed admission. But this year, the process is different, and a cut-off rank is decided within the shortlisted candidates,” said AV Mahajan, chairman, IITJEE Bombay Zone. The cut-off rank is 9720 for the general category.
He explained further, “Earlier the marking system was relative, where ranks were decided on the basis of average performance. However, this year, a new marking process is in practice, after the older one was challenged in the Supreme Court. On the SC’s order, the new process was derived, which had a definite qualifying score, making the number of qualifying candidates much higher.”
In the new marking system, a common rank list, made up of candidates who score at least 10% in each subject and 35% aggregate, is prepared. “Hence, all those who have passed the criteria are declared qualified for the common merit list,” said Mahajan.
Of the 77,550 who appeared for IITJEE from the Bombay Zone, 5,562 candidates have secured ranks and 4,145 have been short-listed for the common merit list.
Nishit agarwal (AIR 6) topped the Bombay Zone with a score of 369, and Manik Dhar (AIR 8), who also had the same score, came second after the tie-break.
Medha Gupta (AIR 136) is the female topper from the zone. Vikas Meena (AIR 642), who appeared from the Bombay zone, has topped the ST list at the national level. Suvugya Chandra (AIR 812) ranks seventh in the all-India SC list.
