Mechanical engineering remains students' top pick

As the choice filling round to get admission in engineering and pharmacy colleges ended on Saturday, the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) registered a surge in the number of students opting for mechanical engineering. Details provided by the ACPC suggest that of the top 20 meritorious students, 14 opted for the mechanical engineering stream.
The colleges most preferred by students for mechanical engineering are Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya (BVM), Vallabh Vidyanagar; LD Collge of Engineering and Faculty of Technology and Engineering at MS University, Vadodara.
Further, the second most-preferred course for the students was computer engineering followed by degree pharmacy courses.
Students opting for computer engineering have preferred to take admission in LD College of Engineering, Faculty of Technology and Engineering at Dharmsinh Desai University, Nadiad and BVM.
LM College of Pahrmacy Pharmacy remains the top choice for pharmacy students.
According to member secretary of ACPC, MN Patel, the trend of students opting for mechanical engineering discipline began last year. “This is because of the better job opportunities in that field,” he said. Of the top 20 meritorious students, nine have opted for LD College of Engineering, while the topper has chosen to study at BVM, Vallabh Vidyanagar.
According to the information provided by the ACPC- around 53317 students of the total 58170 online registered students made choices. As each student can opt for three choices, over 28.18 lakh choices were filled in. At the end of the first choice filling round, of the 6,508 seats, around 2,687 were filled and 3,821 seats remained vacant in engineering. Details suggest more seats have remained vacant in the electronics and communication stream with 1781, followed by 460 vacant seats in computer engineering and 453 in information and technology engineering.
