May'11More students vie for MBBS, fewer for engg
Competition for that coveted medical seat just got tougher, and the number of vacant engineering seats in the state got bigger. When results of the Common Entrance Test were out on Monday, more than double the number of candidates were eligible for the limited medical seats and there were around 8,600 fewer students for engineering seats, compared to the previous year.
Ironical that these two professional courses have headed in opposite directions in the state. The number of students who are eligible for medical counselling is 13,197, as against 5,942 last year, thanks to the easy Biology paper this time. The All India Council for Technical Education's decision to increase the eligibility criteria from 45% to 50% in Class XII resulted in the drop in students eligible for engineering from 73,600 to 64,963. Already, there are around 8,000 engineering seats lying vacant.
Bangalore produced toppers in three streams. Ramya R from MES PU College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Malleswaram, topped the medical and Indian System of Medicine and Homeopathy. Aditya Gaonkar P from Vijaya Composite PU College, Jayanagar, topped in engineering. The only non-Bangalorean topper was in Architecture — Shreya Daffney from Udupi's Poorna Prajna College.
