Net tests boost cafes
The stipulation that only online applications would be accepted for recruitment and entrance examinations has created a boom for Internet cafes. The recent decision of the government to make the Eamcet process online has resulted in the boom spreading to non-metro areas too. Cyber cafes are minting money by collecting Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 for submitting an online application. Nearly 50 lakh job applicants and students submitted online applications this year. Around 26 lakh students submitted online applications for fee reimbursements alone.
Cyber cafes which have mushroomed across the state during the late 1990s and early 2000s, faced a tough time with the penetration of Internet into households. However, their fortunes turned in 2008 with the APPSC deciding to make its application process online. Lakhs of applicants, particularly from rural areas submitted online applications for Group-I, II and IV posts. From 2010, the applications for IIT-JEE, AIEEE also went online. This year the Eamcet application process went totally online.
“The candidates have to upload their photographs and certificates to apply online. Since a majority of the students are from rural areas, they are not acquainted with computers and depend on cyber cafes. Even in cities, a large number of students don’t have personal computers or scanners. They also come to cyber cafes to get their job done. This has created a huge business for cyber cafes,” said Mr T. Surya Narayana, who runs cyber cafes in the city. “Earlier, we used to get less than Rs 1,000 a day. Profits were meagre as our incomes were sufficient only to meet our expenses since we get only Rs 10 an hour from customers. With online applications, we get Rs 500 from each candidate,” said Mr P. Raghavendra, another cyber cafe owner.
