Engineering colleges that have offered seats for their undergraduate courses to students through counselling held by Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) are asking the students to pay more fees than prescribed by the KEA.
The KEA has asked the students to report to their colleges by July 30, failing which their admission would be cancelled. However, the colleges are refusing to admit students unless they pay the fees as demanded by them. The students have complained about this to the KEA.
Executive director of the KEA, V Rashmi, confirmed that many engineering colleges were demanding more fees than the KEA had prescribed. She said the KEA does not have the authority to take action against the colleges, adding that she had forwarded the complaints to principal secretary of higher education and medical education departments.
Rashmi pointed out that the colleges were demanding excess fees even from SC and ST students. She pointed out that the KEA gives seats to SC and ST students for free and it was really bad that the colleges were not sparing even them.
Colleges justify
Meanwhile, chairperson of RV College of Engineering, MK Panduranga Shetty, defended his college’s stance and said it had to ask for higher fees because the one prescribed by the KEA is not enough to provide all the facilities to the students. He said the fees stated by the KEA covers only tuition expenses and does not cover charges for library, laboratory, hostel and university fees and examination fees.
Managements of colleges demanding higher fees said they were willing to provide the evidence of their claims.
Amid this confusion, the students are a worried lot. Time is running out for them to take admission, the last date for which is Monday. The KEA has said that it cannot extend the date of reporting to the college as the Supreme Court has directed that admission process be completed by July 30.
