Feb'12Schools join hands with tutors after failing to fight them
Call it a case of sleeping with the enemy. While schools and coaching classes are known for their mutual animosity towards each other, a number of schools in NCR has tied up with professional coaching institutions and invited them into the classroom.
The logic is simple. Instead of children wasting time shuttling between school and coaching classes, the two are now on the same campus. While schools train children for CBSE, the coaching class trains them for the joint entrance exam (JEE) to IITs.
Take for instance, IITian's Pace, a coaching class that has collaborated with several schools in Delhi, such as DPS Vasundhara and Hillgrove School in Safdarjang Enclave. "For three days of the week, we coach children and for the remaining three days, schools teachers cover the regular CBSE syllabus," says Praveen Tyagi, managing director of IITian's Pace. Students who opt for the IIT coaching also pay the fee of Rs 2.4 lakh in addition to the regular school fee. "Earlier, there would be a duplication of effort, whereas with this integrated model of teaching, both school teachers and those from the coaching class work together to ensure there is no overlap," says Tyagi.
Sharmila Chatterjee, principal of DPS Vasundhara, says that in addition to IIT coaching, she plans to ask Pace to take over the teaching of physics, chemistry and maths for CBSE, too.
While many academicians would balk at the idea of a school and coaching class joining hands, Chatterjee says the school has kept in mind the needs of children and the growing demand for coaching for professional entrance tests. "Students otherwise find themselves torn between school and coaching class. The pressure is high and children are often unable to balance the two," she adds. "We are trying to create an integrated system of education."
There are also some schools in Delhi, including a very well-known institution, where school teachers run their own IIT coaching classes on campus after school hours.
TOI has also came to know that some city schools are also following the Kota model, whereby students are allowed to bunk school and attend professional coaching classes.
But professor Anita Rampal, dean of the faculty of education at Delhi University, feels it is unfortunate that schools are legitimizing coaching for competitive exams and turning this into a "package deal".
"IITs have already talked of changing their format to thwart the coaching phenomenon. They should do this on a regular basis so that JEE does not fall within a pattern and is meant for people who have a real interest in the subject. The school curriculum, too, should be more flexible and challenging and allow students to delve deeper into subjects they are interested in. If this were to happen, students would not need to go in for coaching when faced with a professional entrance test," she says.
