Students need time for new pattern

Engineering Entrance ,

Lakhs of students from Maharashtra seeking admission to engineering courses in non-IIT institutes can now heave a sigh of relief.

The state cabinet has finally given its nod to the proposal of continuing state CET (Common Entrance Test) for engineering admissions for the academic year 2013-14.

The reformed JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) will be implemented in the state from the academic year 2014-15. At the same time, candidates aspiring for admission to IITs, along with the non-IIT institutes, will have to bear the burden of at least two entrance exams.

The higher and technical education department had submitted a proposal to the state cabinet, requesting to continue with the state CET this academic year for students’ convenience.

“This is a welcome move. Students who are preparing for the entrance examination for more than a year cannot immediately adapt to a different pattern,” said Praveen Tyagi, managing director of the IITian’s PACE – a popular coaching class for JEE.
In 2014-15 when the new JEE will be implemented, the state will give 50% weightage to the board marks.

Students, who are preparing for admission to engineering, are relieved. “This was the year of the National Engineering Entrance Test and if I did not do well, I do not have a second chance. I thank the government for giving me a second chance,” said Neeraj Sinha, an aspirant.

Students will have to bear the burden of two tests when the Ministry of Human Resource Department had mooted for single national-level entrance examination.

Forum for Fairness in Education had filed a petition in the Bombay high court against the hasty implementation of the reformed JEE. Its president Jayant Jain said: “This is contradicting the original motto of reducing students’ stress. Though for some students who are seeking admission to non-IIT engineering institutes, it is a relief; there are many who would want to give National Engineering Entrance Test a try for IIT admission.”
