Teachers glad XII marks will matter for IITs

Engineering Entrance ,

Academicians from schools and colleges here have welcomed the decision of the Union human resource development ministry to give 40 per cent weightage to the marks obtained in Class XII examinations for the purpose of deciding merit for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and national institutes of technology (NITs) as also other engineering colleges.

Currently, merit lists for admission to IITs and NITs as also other engineering institutes all over the country was prepared on the basis of an entrance examination, held separately for IITs, NITs and other national level engineering institutes.

The admission to NITs are given through All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The performance of the students in their Class XII examination was not given any weightage at all.

“With the marks in Class XII not being given any weightage earlier, a large number of students did not pay attention to their Class XII board examinations and instead, joined coaching classes set up by private groups to prepare students for IITs and AIEEE exams,” said Dashrath Patel, principal of Sahjanand School here.

“There were many instances where students were able to crack IIT or AIEEE tests but could not secure admission as their scores in Class XII were below the required percentage for admission to IITs and other colleges,” pointed out K S Patel, principal of the Deewan Ballubhai School.

Patel said ignoring the performance of students in Class XII examinations had resulted in mushrooming of coaching classes, with the parents coughing up huge sums, sometimes taking loans from relatives or banks, to pay for the expenses.

He hoped that with the new decision, many of the students might not like to join the coaching classes and instead, focus more on their exams.

Hintendra J Trivedi, principal of C N Vidyalaya, hoped that students would now concentrate equally on school subjects with the decision to give 40 per cent weightage to scores of Class XII exam and only 60 per cent for entrance examinations.

“This is a very good decision. It will reduce the tension of the students who are under pressure to prepare for both the board and competitive examinations simultaneously,” Trivedi pointed out.

Stating that 40 per cent weightage was already given to Class XII scores in admission to engineering and medical courses in the state, he said HRD ministry had almost followed the Gujarat pattern.

He said it was not possible to assess the level of students only on the basis of objective questions as asked in almost all entrance examinations.

The students, he said, should also be judged based on their performance in descriptive and practical exams that was the pattern in board examinations of Class XII across the country.

Principal of LD College of Engineering M N Patel said the new initiative would be a very big relief for students as well as parents.

A senior official in the state directorate of technical education here said some parents in 1955 had moved a petition in the Gujarat High Court seeking the abolition of 40 per cent weightage given to Class XII scores for admission to medical and engineering colleges in the state.

But a division bench had dismissed the petition holding that intelligence level of students could not be decided only by objective tests and allowed the state government to continue with its policy of giving 60 per cent weightage to entrance test and 40 per cent to scores of Class XII exams.
