if we put a slab in front of a hole, there is a delay in the ray of light and the there develops a path differende in the toww rays..therefore we get a distorted interference

when a slab of a certain material is kept in front of one of the slits in the YDSE, there is a displacement of the fringe pattern towards that side of the screen. This shift in the fringe pattern, is given by a formula--> (x-1)Dt/d where 'x' denotes the refractive index of the slab material , 'D' denotes the distance of separation of the plane of the slits and the screen and 'd' is the distance between the two slits. 't' is the thickness of the slab.
