hey guys ???? why is HCOOH A STRONGER ACID THAN CH3 COOH ? ACCORDING 2 ME AS CH3 HAS +I EFFECT IT INCREASES POLARITY OF O-H BOND SO INCREASES ACIDITY . IS THIS AN EXCEPTION ????

no....CH3 group has +I ....thus when H+ leaves the - on O is destabilised by the +I of CH3 group...hope u got it....

YA ANANTH ,
THE CH3 BOND INCREASES THE ELECTRON CLOUD DENSITY ON O ATOM RIGHT ? SO DOES IN NOT MEAN IT MAKES IT MORE POLAR . AND ISNT POLARITY IN DIRECTION OF O-H , INCREASE ACIDIC STRENGTH ?
I GOT UR POINT THAT ADDIND ELECTRON CLOUD TO O MMINUS ION IS DESTABILISING FACTOR . COZ ITS ALREADY ATTAINED OCTET . BUT AM I RIGHT ? IS THE SAME TREND FOLLOWED EVERYWHERE ? LIKE +I EFFECT GROUP DECREASES ACIDITY ?

dude ur correct that CH3 increases the electron cloud density on O atom, but it decreases the polarity.... what is polarity in general...difference between the electronegativity...so when O gets a partial negative charge the electronegatavity of O decreases....hence the polarity also decreases...and more covalent the bond, easier it is to break the bond... ya dude everywhere, same trend....more +I more basicity... hope its clear....
