how do we arrange alkanes in order of their release of energy on combustion?
on which factor is this determined?

 heat of combustion is directly proportionalto stability
 so we can arrange them in thir increasing order of
 stability

Since all the covalent bonds in the reactant molecules of the alkanes are broken, the quantity of heat evolved in these reactions are related to the strength of these bonds (and, of course, the strength of the bonds formed in the products).
