Ans given NaOH is correct acc to the solution.

But tell me how come an acidic compound like acetylene not react with NaOH ?

naoh is not strong enuf.....but na will react as it is strong...

How come an alkali is not stronger than its corresponding base ?

then why is oxalic acid formed when acetylene reacts with KMnO4 in alkaline medium

@ Pranav, even I think it shud be HCl but I dont understand how it cud be NaOH.

remember acetylene is a very weak acid....

acetylene contains a acidic H ... so will react with naoh not with hcl ~~ reacts with agno3 n na ~~

@ pranav agrawal when acetylene reacts with HCl in presence of HgCl2 first vinyl chloride is formed & again it reacts with another mole to form ethylidene chloride

@Ratnesh, KMnO4 sure will oxidise acetylene as it shud. Dont get carried away by the 'alkaline' KMnO4.

addition of hcl in presence of hgcl2 is a form of nucleophilic addition reaction which wont occur until hgcl2 is added, which is not mentioned here ~
