N-ethyl-3-chloro-3-methylpentanamide

here amide is the senior group and amide carbon will
be the terminal carbon of the parent chain ......and
chloro comes before methyl because its

alphabetically preferred ......thats all

here N represents that the group which we're going

to write after N is connected to Nitrogen of amide

.........suppose the compound is

CH3-CH2-C0-N(CH3)2 .....then the name will be

N,N-dimethylpropanamide.....

now these codes after the alk- group represents the type of

unsaturation the compound has ......suppose -an

represents  saturation (no unsaturation) in the

compound .....means no double or triple

bond.......means  all the carbons in the compound

are sp3 hybridised......-en represents  double bond

b/w 2 carbons (if two double bonds then it is

-diene)  in the molecule ....similarly -yne

indicates carbon carbon triple bond........now

understood?
