can anyone tell me the reason why formic acid(HCOOH) is more acidic than benzoic acid...even though phenyl is -i group...so by comparing stability of benzoate ion..it should come out to be more acidic than HCOOH...but the case is opposite. 1 more doubt..is benzoate ion resonance stabilized...even though there is steric effect??

dude acidic nature of bonzoic acid is becoz of the presence of sp2 hybridised c- atom. due to 33.33% contribution of s-character electrons r dragged towards the nucleus hence increasing the ionization energy. therefore u have an acidic nature to benzoic acid. plz rate me dude even i'm a new kid on the block

well in benzoic acid due 2 resonance-stabilisation the H-atom inCOOH is not easily available 4 protonation..so its a weaker acid...but in HCOOH due to -I effect of COOH grp.. H can b easily released nd so fomic acid is stronger acid dan benzoic acid...... plss rate me on my ans tho m a newbie...

sorry sir, actually there was some serious problem which was preventing me from logging in...sorry for that..
but i still didn't get any satisfactory answer. if benzoic acid is resonance stabilized,so is the benzoate ion, which means that benzoic acid should be more acidic than HCOOH as it's ion is more stable, but this isn't the case...plz help!!& this time i'll surely respond..
