in short SN1 reactions involve the formation of carbocations ..and SN2 involves the transition state in which no shifting of charges as per carbocation stability concept takes place... SN2 generally takes place in case of sterically hindered species...

see its very difficult to explain every thing here......u better refer to the articles on wikipedia.....it is nicely given there with diagrams and examples....i also learned from there only....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SN1 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SN2_reaction
