Can chromic acid oxidise both secondary and primary alcohol, or one of them???

primary alcohols r oxidized to aldehydes on treating wit chromic acid. i dont think sec alcohols r oxidized

u r right KAB.chromic acid oxidizes both.

Rohit,I have confirmed that Jones reagent(chromic acid in aq acetone)can oxidise both of them.

this is good oxidising agent so it oxidise both primery and secondery alcohols.primery oxidise into aldehyde which further oxidise into same number of carbon atom acid while sec. alcohol oxidise into ketones which further oxidise into less number of carbon acids.always remember tertiary alcohol cannot undergo oxidation by these oxidising agent due to absence of redusing hydrogen.
