today i was reading carbohydrates chpt from arihant..... wat i found confusinf was in first part they say glucose has op-en structure..... but in latter half they suddenly say that glucose has closed ring structure.... thay do not tell definitely which structuere to follow..... plzzz tell me which one is right....

its actually an eqbm mixture of both the structures :) But the ring structure predominates to 99.99 % and the open chain structure only 0.01 % That's why glucose fails to answer certain tests like schiff's test and NaHSO3 test :)

The ring structure is more relevant as the open structure does not explain many other properties of carbonyl compounds like formation of Schiff bases, reaction with tollens/fehling reagents, etc..better explanation given in Morrison and Boyd

For any ques of carbohydrate's reactions, Always use its closed ring structure.

compound stays in equilibrium...open ring, alpha and beta forms.. (from ncert)
and we consider different structures for different reactions....work according to ncert...

yes its easier to think by the open structure. For showing any reaction man, open structure is easier to use but for certain concepts that involve ring, we can only explain using ring structure

for problems in volving the reactivity of the aldehyde group consider open structure only when there is an ambiguity go for the cylic one !!!! (like schiff test and melting point and all) still confused??? follow NCERT text!!!
