On reaction with Ca(OH)2, the calcium salt (CH3COO)2Ca is formed. This along with (HCOO)2Ca is heated to form the crossed dry distillation product CH3CHO and CaCO3. Now CH3 CHO reacts with conc. H2SO4 to form paraldehyde.
The dry distillation reaction is as follows
heat
( RCOO ) Ca ( OOCR' ) ======= Ca CO3 + RCOR', where R and R' could be the same or different.
