DMSO is nothing but dimethyl suphoxide
 
it is an aprotic solvent which causes solvation of K+ effectively thus releasing OH- for SN2 reaction to take place with ease
 
it favours SN2 reaction!!!

DMSO is used in certain oxdn rns like Swern oxdn etc :)
