WEn do we pair the electrons in orbitals????.......for example [niCN ]2-
we pair and we get dsp2
another [NiCO]2+
we dont pair.........so we get sp3

we pair when we have strong field ligand n we don pair when we don have strong field ligand
 
like CN is a strong field ligand

but CO is also a strong ligand ,y pairing does not take place here?
i read about this in 1 book which said in front of Ni ,CO acts as a weak ligand .but y is it so?
plz ans soon
