On oxidation of toluene by dil. HNO3, the product obtained is: (a) benzaldehyde (b) benzoic acid (c) nitrophenol (d) phenol

hey is my answer right HNO3 is a strong oxidising agent like KMnO4 and thus oxidises methyl group to benzoic acid no???

that is the point. i don't think any oxidising agent which is stronger that KMnO4 will have the same reaction

why do you say so ??? ofcourse it is possible do you know dil HNO3 has the capability to form quinone from phenol!!!only when you use Nitration mixture nitration occurs!!! understood now!!!! remove that msconception even glucose when treated with HNO3 gives saccharic acid!!!
