Aldehydes are susceptible to oxidation and are easily oxidised to carboxylic acid, hence the compound (x) should be CH3COOH.This will react with SOCl2 to form (y) CH3COCl. which on reaction with sodium acetate forms (z) CH3CO.O.COCH3. Thus the answer should be (2) and not (1).
The oxidation proceeds via the diol, CH3CH(OH)2. Even if we consider this unstable diol reacts further it cannot lead to the product (1).
