can some1 explain the solubility of halo-alkanes in water?? it is a bit confusing in the text book....

pg 291 para on solubility

Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.

Alkyl halides are although polar in nature they are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents.Their insolubility in water is due to their inability to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules or to break the hydrogen bonds already existing in water molecules.

the hydrogen bonds formed by haloalkanes are not as strong as hydrogen bonds by water. Hence, strong bonds are broken and weak bonds are made, so H>0, hence less solubility

alkyl halides are insoluble in water because they cant form hydrogen bonds with water........ energy is needed to from hydrogen bonds with water by breaking the existing h bonds in water ,which is not attainable

a substance dissolves ina given solvent wen the new bonds that is the solvent-solute bonds are more stronger and stable as compared to the solute-solute bonds....for alkyl halides this does not happen the new bonds so formed are rlly weak and also unstable thus it does not dissolve in water...ok????

v know some energy is req. to break the interactions between haloalkane molecules ans H-bond in water.this energy is not released when new bonds are formed between haloalkane and water molecules.so still some energy is req.so its they r not soluble.

IN SIMPLE WORDS:

ENERGY RELEASED DOES NOT COMPENSATE FOR THE ENERGY REQ.
i too dint understand it at the 1st look.
hope this helps
