How can we distinguish between methyl alcohol and ethyl alcohol

Iodoform test. It works because ethanol is oxisidised to ethanal in the rxn, which answers iodoform.

IODOFORM TEST
the alcohol is reacted with iodine and NaOH which gives a yellow precipitate of methyl iodide..
if the alcohol contains methyl grp on alpha carbon, it will give ppt..othrwsie not!!!
so only ethyl alcohol answers this test..

U r wrong. Iodoform is used to find CH3CO- group n not methyl group.

iodoform test toh u cannot do on day to day basis...rite....agar pine ka man kare toh boil it...but be careful...one wch boils at lower temp is methyl alcohol...aur jo bach gaya...usse pi lina...as it will not be poisonous..

Methyl alcohole is poisionous while ethanol is not..
Methyl alco..cant give iodoform test whie ethanol gives..
