oxidation due to periodic acid takes place in any compd having c-oh , c-nh2, c=o at adjacent positions on the same side(refer to glucose structure) as a simple working rule - break the bond btween th adjacent carbons and replace them with oh grp even the Nh2 grp is replced by oh grp...now if there are 2 or more than 2 oh attached to any carbon water molecule is lost from it eg if u get CH2 - (oh)2 then remeoving h2o gives Ch2=O.. try it and tell me if u have any problem
