there is nothing called as methene.

how cam there be a double bond in something where there is just one carbon.

the simplest hydrocarbon containing double bond is ethene.

arey u will find some mistakes in ncert books too...there is nothing lyk methene..another mistake u will find in the topic dehrdrohalogenation of alkyl halides class 12 book..

Methene is nothing but methylene radical. (Methene was the former name.)

:CH2 radical. ..no double bonds here.

example : methylene bromide : CH2Br2.

Am not having ncert rite now ..so cant chk...(btw whats so funny here ?)

dude, read that full sentence.

It may be remembered that first member of alkene series is: CH₂ (replacing n by 1 in C_nH_2n) known as methene but has a very short life. Carbon has valency 4 and hydrogen 1. So, this is not stable. So, we start the alkene series form stable member i.e. ethene CH₂=CH₂.

Methylene radical is the bivalent radical CH₂ derived from methane.

methene does not exist as c-h double bond cannot exist(only 1 electron in hydrogen).
