m & o , directing group..

Engineering Entrance , Medical Entrance , AIPMT , JEE Main , AIIMS , JEE Advanced , Chemistry , Organic Chemistry

why halobenzene is an op directing group but still a ring deactivator?

-I has slight edge over +M effect in case of halogens....

well i doubt abt my answer....can anybody else specify is that wrong reason or right??????

ya one more reason may be that halogens have highest electronegativity compared to other elements so in this case inductive effect is stronger?????

it is because halogens like F,Cl,Br,I have have 3 lone pairs of electrons.these lone pairs are being donated to the benzene ring and thus,as a result,increase the ortho-para density and +r effect happens.but between C-Cl ,-I effect is more stronger.hencea ring deactivator.

-I effect is more stronger because halogens have high electronegativity.
