Is it like this, or the other way round ???

My birthday is no ordinary day.

Its the day when i declared in my own voice,

I WILL NOT GO QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT,
I WILL NOT VANISH WITHOUT A FIGHT,
I AM GOING TO LIVE ON,
I AM GOING TO SURVIVE,
I AM GOING TO GET WHATEVER I WANT.

I CELEBRATE MY BIRTHDAY, AS MY INDEPENDENCE DAY !!!!!!!!!

I think you have asked something opposite..
Actually H0H is more acidic than CH3OR. .. and the reason is simple
conjugate base CH3O- is more basic than -OH. (based on electron density)

Hence H2O is more acidic than CH3OH.

in CH3--OH the -CH3 group  shows +I effect, i.e,  electron releasing character.
therefore the electron density on O atom is more..
hence the acidic character is much lessened

this is not found in H2O .... hence H2O is more acidic than CH3OH

Question is perfectly all right. My teacher also told that only methanol is more acidic than H20. Gotta ask him why though.

actually,i think HOH is more acidic than CH3OH simply because ka of HOH IS 10-14 and ka ofCH3OH is around 10-16.

The ques is correct,
When U luk at the Pka values, CH3OH is more acidic than H2O.

Many of U hav given +I effect as the reason but its not true becoz +I effect wud INCREASE BASICITY NOT ACIDITY.

Although alcohols are less acidic than water but this exception can be explained only in one way-
See, in CH3OH, First of all the C-O bond is polar and secondly due to +I effect of CH3, the polarity of the bond increases, and in comparison to this, the OH-H bond is less polar as H has no inductive effect.
So CH3-OH, being polar breaks out easily thus giving H, and hence is more acidic.

See, the acidity diff is very less. The Pka of water=15.7 and that of CH3OH=15.5, so the diff is very less. They are almost equally acidic, but still the explanation can be the one given by me.

Hope U got it.

ok then if we follow this polar bond concept then why do we have H2O more acidic than C2H5OH

@ sniper/...............

your confusing the whole polar bond theory with this...........

according to chemical polarity .......
ethanol being a polar compound is soluble in water due to the polar nature of water.............

we never conclude on that basis that h2o is more acidic than ethanol

and for all this mess..........LET ME CLEAR THIS ONCE AND FOR ALL............

I DONT KNOW HOW MANY TIMES I'VE SAID NOT TO GENERALISE THINGS.......

ITS NOT ABOUT ALCOHOLS VS WATER.......FOR ACIDITY......

1.) methanol is a stronger acid than water....
2.) but ethanol is weaker than water..........

had ho gayi yaar,, i am saying thaat tarin has given polar bond reason for methanol then why cant we use it for ethanol
