Direct nitration of aniline is not carried out. Explain why?

Hey, guess thts because NH2 group being basic, the H+ also has a possibility to attck that group apart from the activated benze ring-
|

that's likely but mostly it will be the benzene molecules that will be attacked because they have the highest charge density
now the answer because -NH_{2} is one of the strongest activating groups so the -NO_{2} gets attached in all o,p positions so u use a protecting groups namely (MeCO)_{2}C

U know why aniline does not respond to friedel craft reactions?
ITs becoz the electron density is very high on the N of NH2. So the electrophile will attack NH2 instead of benzene.
The same reason applies to nitration.
Possibilities-
1) NO2 +ve formed can attach to NH2.
2) The H+ formed can attcach to NH2 to form NH3+ which will deactivate the ring.
In either case, nitration will not occur on the ring.
Rate if satisfied.

not that u cant.u will get meta nitro anilene and para the isomer.meta product s becoz anilene gets protnated to form anilinium ion which will deactivate the ring and orient the no2 group towards the meta position

While carrying out the nitration of aniline conc.nitric acid is used.As a result nitric acid being a strong oxidising agent results into the formation of ortho and para nitro aniline due to which the yield of the desird product is low nad a mixture of products are obtained. Besides this NH2 group being deactivating group the meta product is also formed to some extent. I n order to prevent this first aniline is treated with acetic anhydride which forms a complex with NH2 and hence it thereby reduces the deactivating nature of NH2 group and results into the formation of para nitro aniline as a major product.

you are wrong, NH2 is not deactivating group, it is an activating group.
|

I know but during the rxn it is protonated with H+ to form anilinium ion which acts as deactivating group.Hope it's clear now.

Ya the second statement is true but in ur earlier post, you mentioned NH2 is deactivating, therefore I objected.
